is this an example of learnedy?

this week's cover of the new yorker is creating a whole lotta drama! the question is whether or not it's justified. it definitely makes a statement! does it make a bigger statement then some of the other covers i found in a google search? that's hard to say. the new yorker is known for satirical covers that are either poking fun at current events or are made to get people thinking and talking about them. i think this cover does both. i also think it's probably slightly over the top.

the problem with a cover like this is not that it perpetuates stereotypes that people in the midwest might think are true but that the media picks up the story and it explodes. let's be real; i seriously doubt that a person in the midwest who actually believes that barack obama is a muslim has a subscription or would ever see a cover of the new yorker unless it was shown on the news. i don't think a midwesterner is the new yorker's target audience...

li lo is so creative!

leopard ankle gloves - $42
dom leggings - $123
glimmer leggings - $99
mr. president leggings - $132
does the world need another celebrity "fashion designer"? well, someone thinks so because lindsay lohan is coming out with her very own line of leggings and ankle gloves! i personally don't think the world needs more celebrity designers or leggings but there are a few reasons i think 6126 by lindsay lohan is pretty awesome.
first the name of her line; 6126 comes from marilyn monroe's birthday. marilyn is li lo's hero, obviously, what troubled teen doesn't love marilyn? second, is the term ankle gloves! i believe that is a fancy term for leg warmers! lastly, i think that the mr. president leggings are amazing - they have knee pads! which is so hilarious!!
there's some not so awesome stuff about 6126 by lindsay lohan: the leggings and the price! now i've been known to rock the leggings; but i believe that fashion craze must be over now! and why in the world should anyone pay over $100 for something that should only be worn to the gym?

for the love of gossip

the new york times recently ran an article about gossip girl and the impact the show has had on fashion. i think it's great that a teen show is shaping the face of fashion so much and that young people are so into it! it sure wasn't like that back in my day! shows like 90210, dawson's creek, my so called life and felicity didn't quite inspire fashion in the same way.

gossip girl is just a fun show all around! the cast, the clothes, the drama - this show has got it all. the new season starts september 1st, it's one good thing about summer ending.

things i don't understand

there are many things i don't understand in this world and one of them is the obsession morning news shows have with all things dangerous. if we are to really listen to these shows i don't see how anyone would ever leave the house! for example, the today show just finished a series called summer hazards where they talked about the various reasons people should be scared of summer.

they had 3 segments, the first was about how dangerous lawn mowers are. the today show would like us to believe that tons of people are riding lawn mowers with headphones on and generally not paying attention to their kids. i have to ask, how are that many people running over their children with lawn movers? the most ridiculous segment was the 2nd segment that spoke about how dangerous it is to dig a deep hole at the beach. again, how many people are actually getting injured or killed as a result of collapsing sand? the final segment was about how dangerous hot cars are. this one i understand; people seem to always forget that their kids are in the car on the hottest summer day. here's the lessons we learned from the today show:
1. don't listen to your ipod while driving your lawn mower, and always look behind you before backing up.
2. no more digging holes to china.
3. don't leave your kids in the car!!!!

thanks nbc for these valuable yet absurd lessons.

thumbs up/thumbs down thursday!

i am sad to announce that i have to give a thumbs down to jeff lewis from bravo's reality show flipping out.  i have really tried to like him but he's just too crazy.  my feelings for jeff are hard to put into words; it's basically a general feeling of violence when i see him.

i will begin with the obvious; the lips.  are they for real?  i can't be sure but i'm assuming not.  he's very open about the fact he gets regular botox and so i imagine he does the lips as well.  he has a whole host of people working for him but they don't have any work to do.  he's real distrusting that no one is working; but it's like what does he expect they don't have anything to do.

i will say that the show is entertaining and he is a talented designer; but he's just too much.

xoxo

thumbs up/thumbs down

i would like to give a thumbs up to websites dedicated to cute baby animals.  there's just something about cute cuddly creatures that makes me so happy.  it might sound really cheesy but these sites really are great.  if you are ever having a bad day i suggest going and looking and some baby animals.  these sites are best for people with a desk job; below i have listed a couple of good cute animal sites i like.

stuff white people like

i can't resist a plug for one of my favorite blogs stuff white people like; it's a blog "devoted to the stuff that white people like." it's the most hilarious and well written look at basically the 30 something urbanite population. so far he has 104 things white people like, and i must say they are pretty much right on! they range from david sedaris and sarah silverman to expensive sandwhichs and breakfast places . i have agreed with a very large majority of his posts.

people's reaction to the blog is also quite funny - people either love it or they hate it and if they hate it they are quite vocal about it. they are just confused and offended by the idea of satire.

stuff white people like has become so popular that it has also been turned into a book. if you have a chance to check it out i would love to know what you think!
