i'm back bitches
i guess i had what could only be called a summer vacation. although i didn't really go on vacation. life has gotten pretty nutty and i haven't been able to find the time to blog!
i've made the decision that for the next 2 months i will be focusing my opinions on the world of politics. this is such a crazy time for american politics that i have to talk about it! i hope you all enjoy it as much as i do. i will still be commenting on the wonderful world of pop culture; but politics will play a bigger role. and if you really think about it, politics and pop culture are more similar now then they have ever been.

my olympic update
i just found out the men's gymnastic uniforms consist of socks and stirrup pants! how awesome is that?
i'm sorry but there's no way that all these girls are 16; most of them look about 10. i understand that all that jumping probably stunts your growth and that all that exercises can halt maturity but come on! it's total crap that we are supposed to "trust" a government that has questionable morals to provide truthful documents stating the age of the athletes.
despite having 2 of their 6 teammates injured, making some pretty big mistakes and generally letting their nerves get the best of them the us gymnasts finished strong and are in good shape for the medal round! yay america!

thumbs up
this week thumbs up/thumbs down will be on friday.
one of my favorite things is quickly approaching and this week i have to give a big thumbs up to the olympics!!
the olypmics are so great for so many reasons!
first, the human interest stories associated with the olypmics are amazing. for example the 41 year old swimmer dara torres who is competing in her record setting 5th olympic games, and is so old that some of the other athletes weren't even born when she began her career. then there's the guy carrying the US flag in the opening ceremony - he's one of sudan's "lost boys"and is now a US citizen competing in track and field! how heartwarming is that? during the next 2 weeks there will be countless other stories like this and i can't wait!
the best part of the olympic for me is that for 2.5 weeks it becomes completely appropriate to be super patriotic and say things like "the US is gonna kick ass on the metal stand!" i enjoy keeping track of just how awesome america is by the running tally of medals. if it seems like america always wins the most medals; it's because we do because we are awesome!

teen choice awards
i have to give it up for our teen choice stars; they really stepped up the fashion game at last night's teen choice awards! in years past people have showed up casual and "funky" - it wasn't very cute.
i really loved the bright colors, and defined waist lines on our gossip girl faves leighton and blake. however, i think they were both outshined by kristen bell, the shows awesome narrator. her pink high waisted skirt and fun long necklace were both young and fresh.
i thought both sophia bush and rachel bilson's make up was great; very natural. rachel bilson in general looked amazing. the dress was perfect for the occasion and the weather; her big earrings were fun and those nude shoes made her legs look super duper long!
i liked lc's whole look. she really made a hippie maxi dress feel current with the belted waist and her make up.
i don't really have much to say about vanessa hudgins, i just thought i should have an actual teenager in the picture while talking about the teen choice awards! she looks cute though.
i have to complement all the hair, it was sexy without being trashy and and natural without looking undone.
well done ladies...

public service announcement
on sunday i decided to venture to the beach, it was great fun. the sun, the surf and great company all made for an amazing day!
i was surprised at the amount of people using tanning oil and baking in the sun! i'm all for being out in the sun, but not without SPF 55! i don't even think it's attractive to be that tan anymore. why don't people understand the effects of sun damage? this has been getting a lot of attention the past few years so it doesn't make sense that people wouldn't know about the negative effects of the sun. i guess people don't care or the feel invincible? well, we'll see how they feel when they look like a big piece of weird spotted aged leather.

thumbs up
it's not my goal to use learn about it as a political platform but....
i have to give a thumbs up to john mccain for the desperate and ridiculous attempt to win the hearts of voters. what's up with the music at the end of that ad? the entire ad is centered around this doomsday idea that barack obama is too famous and then during the last 5 seconds the music changes to happy playland music and john mccains face and voice appear on screen endorsing the ad. the whole thing is so creepy.
i never thought i would give a thumbs up to john mccain, but his latest ad has made me change my mind. i love that his campaign thought it was a good idea to compare barack obama to brit brit and paris hilton. as though having people from every walk of life and in several different countries be excited for you is a bad thing! i welcome anything that shines a light on the changes that need to be made in our country.

r kelly is crazy...
thumbs down for r kelly and his craziness. what the hell is wrong with him? i've never been a huge fan or anything, but in the past i sort of understood why people liked him. now, i absolutely cannot understand why/how people are still fans of his. the way women react to him is crazy! it's beyond ridiculous that he was found innocent on those child porn charges not to mention that he's just so slimy and nasty towards women. it doesn't seem possible that the ladies would be down for him.
i think he's literally gone insane. trapped in the closet part one was a little bit out there but i was still able to find the humor in it; trapped in the closet part 2 was just uncomfortable to watch. his lack of shame regarding sex also makes me believe he's a bit nutty; his latest album is filled with sexual content. you'd think he'd lay low for a minute and work on creating a better image for himself. any way you look at it r kelly is horrible and is most deserving of his thumbs down status!!

why are we obsessed with taylor swift?
i am so confused - who is taylor swift and why is everyone in love with her? i decided to wikipeda her to find out.
apparently she's a country music super star. her first album went triple platinum; but to me she just looks like a girl who hasn't been told that the spiral perm is super out dated. the entertainment "news" shows are obsessed with her and apparently so is maxium; she was named number 52 on their sexiest women of '08 list. she's 18 years old with questionable style, how is that hot?! she goes to a christian high school and sold an album exclusively at wal-mart; maybe that's hot...? i don't know, i'm still confused.

the summer of reality
so i decided to have a lazy sunday afternoon and watch the hours of tv that have accumulated on my TIVO. after going through i realized the only shows on the air lately are reality shows. i've accepted that the reality show is the new wave of tv and i love it but it's getting to be a bit ridiculous, it seems like they will give anyone a show. some of these shows i love, some i can tolerate and others i just don't understand.
i could go on and on but here are just a few of the most recent shows to enter the reality craze:
date my ex: jo and slade is the newest summer reality show from bravo. it's the story of jo and slade from real housewives of the oc, they are no longer dating and he is helping her find her next great love. there's only been one episode so maybe i should give it another chance, but i don't understand why this show was made. first of all, the only good thing about jo and slade is that his name is slade smiley (best reality name ever!). other then that they are both whiny and annoying. they were so wrong for each other during the real housewives that's it's hard to imagine how they have even remained friends. everything about this show seems like pathetic attempt to get them back together so they can have yet another spin off show to extend their 15 minutes.
finally we come to pam girl on the loose and while this show isn't even on yet i already can't stand it! i know i might eat my words later, it happens often with these damn reality shows but i really think this time i'll be right. i just don't understand why in the world does e! think we need to see any more of pamela anderson?? what is she possibly going to be doing that will fill up 25 minutes of airtime?? i saw a preview the other day and it looked like tommy lee was going to be on it as well! i feel very strongly that they need to stay away from each other and tv cameras; we've seen too much of them in the past.

thumbs down...
i have to give a big thumbs down to mariah carey. she's gone totally crazy...again. what is she doing with nick cannon!! i considered including him in my thumbs down, but he's probably having a great time and my issues with mariah run deeper then just nick cannon. for example, what's up with the butterflies? she's still trying to market perfume with a butterfly bottle. i thought we were over butterflies. she seems totally stuck in 2000.
why are they married? they look so awkward together! it's like they are having trouble even acting like they "love" each other. well not so much nick, he looks stoked; he's having sex with a woman he's had a crush on since grammar school. mariah on the other hand looks a bit freaked out; like she knows she made the wrong choice and doesn't know how to get out of it.

thumbs up....
shark week is back! and in celebration this week's thumbs up is about the week long series on the discovery channel dedicated to sharks. i love that shark week has entered the pop culture vernacular! everyone from nerds to nba athletes can't seem to get enough of it. it seems like such a random thing for people to go crazy over, it's supposed to be educational so it's not always super exciting.

the cult of apple
lately i've been seeing this commercial for this really nice refrigerator made by samsung; it's got french doors and everything (apparently you can fit twice as much stuff in a fridge with french doors). it's about $2500, which seems like a lot of money to pay for a refrigerator made by the same people who made my last phone. now i have the iphone and it got me thinking, what would happen if apple put out a refrigerator? it would be so amazing, i bet people would line up for days in anticipation. it would probably be about $6000, but i wouldn't care i would still buy it! i don't even have space for a fancy fridge in my tiny nyc apartment but i would buy it anyway. there would obviously be a place for your ipod/iphone/apple tv etc; but just imagine how smart it would be - maybe they could figure out a way to go grocery shopping for you. it wouldn't surprise me; steve jobs is the smartest guy ever!

kanye's the shizz
now i've been a fan of kanye's for a while but i've officially joined his fan club in a big way! this is the best thing ever! i know that he's a pompous jerk sometimes; but man he can back it up! i used to think that his ranting and raving was annoying and pompous but i know think he's just awesome. his latest album is so wonderful and his verse in estelle's new song american boy is so sick i can barely stand it. it's a great summer song that i can't stop listening to.

thumbs up/thumbs down thursday!
it's time for another installment of the fabulous thumbs up thumbs down!! this week they are actually the same thing!
these are pictures of the chinese swat team! yes, you read me correctly, the chinese swat team uses segways!! since the chinese don't strike me as the type of people to joke around, i assume these are true. apparently they are training for a possible terriost attack at the olympics! segways go about 12mph, hopefully there's not some type of high speed chase situation. how amazing would it be to see these guys coming at you? i'm not going to lie, they are totally a little scary. they seem way more hard core then that cop in the mall...

how to stay pretty in a troubled economy!
you may think that staying pretty and groomed is near impossible in this troubled economy but i may have found something to help!
if you can't afford to get waxed, why not use this fab new product betty! it's color for the hair down there! my fave is the fun betty - it's hard to tell from the picture but it's bright pink. it's under $20 and might provide some fun in these sad economic times.

li lo is so creative!
first the name of her line; 6126 comes from marilyn monroe's birthday. marilyn is li lo's hero, obviously, what troubled teen doesn't love marilyn? second, is the term ankle gloves! i believe that is a fancy term for leg warmers! lastly, i think that the mr. president leggings are amazing - they have knee pads! which is so hilarious!!
there's some not so awesome stuff about 6126 by lindsay lohan: the leggings and the price! now i've been known to rock the leggings; but i believe that fashion craze must be over now! and why in the world should anyone pay over $100 for something that should only be worn to the gym?

for the love of gossip
the new york times recently ran an article about gossip girl and the impact the show has had on fashion. i think it's great that a teen show is shaping the face of fashion so much and that young people are so into it! it sure wasn't like that back in my day! shows like 90210, dawson's creek, my so called life and felicity didn't quite inspire fashion in the same way.

things i don't understand
there are many things i don't understand in this world and one of them is the obsession morning news shows have with all things dangerous. if we are to really listen to these shows i don't see how anyone would ever leave the house! for example, the today show just finished a series called summer hazards where they talked about the various reasons people should be scared of summer.
they had 3 segments, the first was about how dangerous lawn mowers are. the today show would like us to believe that tons of people are riding lawn mowers with headphones on and generally not paying attention to their kids. i have to ask, how are that many people running over their children with lawn movers? the most ridiculous segment was the 2nd segment that spoke about how dangerous it is to dig a deep hole at the beach. again, how many people are actually getting injured or killed as a result of collapsing sand? the final segment was about how dangerous hot cars are. this one i understand; people seem to always forget that their kids are in the car on the hottest summer day. here's the lessons we learned from the today show:
1. don't listen to your ipod while driving your lawn mower, and always look behind you before backing up.
2. no more digging holes to china.
3. don't leave your kids in the car!!!!
thanks nbc for these valuable yet absurd lessons.

thumbs up/thumbs down thursday!
i am sad to announce that i have to give a thumbs down to jeff lewis from bravo's reality show flipping out. i have really tried to like him but he's just too crazy. my feelings for jeff are hard to put into words; it's basically a general feeling of violence when i see him.

stuff white people like
i can't resist a plug for one of my favorite blogs stuff white people like; it's a blog "devoted to the stuff that white people like." it's the most hilarious and well written look at basically the 30 something urbanite population. so far he has 104 things white people like, and i must say they are pretty much right on! they range from david sedaris and sarah silverman to expensive sandwhichs and breakfast places . i have agreed with a very large majority of his posts.
people's reaction to the blog is also quite funny - people either love it or they hate it and if they hate it they are quite vocal about it. they are just confused and offended by the idea of satire.
stuff white people like has become so popular that it has also been turned into a book. if you have a chance to check it out i would love to know what you think!

thumbs up/down....
this is something i started a couple years ago; it's all about giving a thumbs up or thumbs down to any situation. it's pretty fun...
Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down...
once DK hit the stage, how cared about age! they were just as easy and fun as ever. all in all it was a good time. i was right along side the 17 year old girls jumping up and down singing damaged on the top of my lungs!
so i have to say thumbs down for being the oldest person in the room but thumbs up for fun pop music and a funky ass beat i can dance to!!!

i've finally done it...
hi everyone,
welcome to my world and thanks for checking this out. i've been thinking about a blog for a long time and am excited to actually get one off the ground! i'm not quite sure what it will evolve into but i'm hoping to have it be a mix of all my favorite things: pop culture, fashion, tv, etc...
since graduating i have been working a desk job and am always looking for a happy little escape to my otherwise boring day. this is what i'm hoping learn about it can be for us.
